AI-assisted tool helps decongest the administration of justice
The article reports on a project led by Universitat Pompeu Fabra (UPF), together with judicial institutions and private partners, to develop an AI assistant that supports judges and court staff. The tool is designed to streamline and accelerate the handling of specific judicial procedures, particularly insolvency cases involving individuals without assets.
By automating repetitive administrative tasks — such as document classification, case summarisation, and drafting standard court orders — the assistant frees legal professionals to focus on substantive decision-making. Tested on approximately 3,000 anonymised case files, the system has shown promising results, although some technical challenges remain, especially in document reading and formatting. Overall, the initiative aims to reduce delays and increase efficiency without compromising legal safeguards.
