UPF designs an AI assistant to support insolvency court procedures, shorten resolution times and speed up the administration of justice

The goal is to support commercial-court judges and court staff in Barcelona by automating mechanical tasks during insolvency proceedings, thereby reducing the time needed for resolution and increasing the quantity and quality of information available for decision-making.

The proof-of-concept has been led by Mireia Artigot Golobardes (UPF) and José María Fernández Seijo (former judge at Mercantile Court 11 of Barcelona and current member of the General Council of the Judiciary), with the collaboration of governmental and judicial institutions.

The AI tool is intended for commercial courts, specifically for insolvency procedures for individuals without sufficient net assets to repay their debts — what in legal terms are called insolvency procedures for discharge of unsatisfied liability for natural persons with insufficient assets. The tool helps to automate some tasks, allowing judges and court staff to devote more time to the qualitative aspects of their work. 

The project is funded by the Spanish Research Agency and carried out under the framework of the European-level project JuLIA, of DG Justice of the EU.
